The Mike’s Bikes Model

When we shipped our very 1st container to Ghana in 2008 we had little idea of what the conditions where going to be like on the ground. Driven by our purpose at home “to get as many people on bikes as possible” we wanted to make a difference in communities in which (riding) a bicycle was the exception and not the rule. This journey led us to different countries on the African continent and we learned important lessons along the way.

Perhaps the most important one has become a guiding principle until today: economic value & sustainability. Big words that need a bit of elaboration. We don’t believe in the way that a lot of bicycle charities out there operate, which is driven by the self-fulfilling prophecy of poor (African) communities in need of handouts including free bicycles. This often results in dependency on donations and when these eventually dry up, there is a good chance that these projects simply collapse.

We focus on local and community based bicycle culture and the necessary skills of individuals to take things to the next level. The Mike's Bikes Foundation supports small bike shops and business owners. The recipient is responsible for financing the freight costs of a container as well as the cost of import which includes applicable taxes, the import agent and local logistics. These costs are substantial and require sound budgeting skills. Our so called “sister shops” are independent and make their own decisions. They know their markets best and decide on pricing, operations and all matters concerning their business. Some have converted shipping containers into shop and storage space, others operate from a tiny space in a busy market area, it all depends on what works best in the different locations. This market based approach has led to emergence of several sister shops into growing bicycle businesses that work with various local and global suppliers.

The Mike’s Bikes Foundation believes in up-cycling: it is impossible to create economic value through no longer functioning, very worn or badly damaged items. Our donations are screened and intended for sister shops to make a profit in order to take their businesses to the next level. If you are unsure whether your donated item is suitable, you can get in touch via the contact form or check in at any of our local Mike’s Bikes stores. Financial contributions are always needed for upfront payments of shipping costs and for purchasing of sea-worthy empty containers for the next shipment. You can donate here.
